Defining Baramin by Discontinuity Systematics

Discontinuity Sytematics is defined as a process of finding and delineating the gaps (discontinuities) between two or more objects or concepts. When applied to biology and taxonomy, it shows the major distinctions between the different created kinds of plants and animals as describe in the scriptural account of Genesis.

One of the primary goals of Baraminologists is to discover and define the boundaries and limits of the Created Kinds of plants and animals. The methods and processes for achieving this goal are being developed and is more formally known as discontinuity systematics.

Baraminologists are not directly thinking in terms of methodological naturalism or the alternatives, but they are doing this process. The goals of Baraminology require different approaches to studying morphology, genetics, statistics, etc. for both living and fossil members of Created Kinds.

Baraminologists are trying to discover the limits and boundaries of the original Created Kinds. By default, this employs different processes than evolutionary studies in the relationships of plants or animals. Evolution seeks to find continuity – those smooth transitions and gradations from one type of animal into another. Not only does Creation not expect to find such transitions, it expects to find gaps between different types of organisms where there are no relationships. These gaps are formally called discontinuities.

Because Scripture states that Created Kinds are able to reproduce, the number one criteria that baraminologists seek is the ability to hybridize. If two species are able to hybridize, they are both within the same Kind. Evolutionism expects species to be separate and unable to breed together or hybridize. Creationism expects that the different species of animals or plants within a Kind can hybridize.

A good example is when a new fossil human intermediate is proclaimed by the media. evoutionists are quick to assume human evolution is proven while creationists are quick to say it is just an ape, a fraud, or ???. The fact is that we do not yet know the exact extent and boundaries of the human or ape kinds. There is a surprising amount of variation in most, if not all, kinds and humans are no diferent. Consider that both evolutionists and creationists acept neanderthal adn ???????? as humans.

Good science follows the evience where it leads. Evolutionists shun some of the possibilities through methodolgical naturalism. Creationists should be careful not to sweng the pendulum too far the other way by using what can be called methodological creationism.

Evolutionists are seeking the missink links, the connections that make a continual lineage in the evolutionary tree of life. Baraminologists, instead, are focused on the gaps (discontinuities) that exist between created Kinds as shown in the cration Orchard.

Many scientists hold views based on presuppositions whether they are aware fo them or not. This is probably ot a bad thing as it can help generate many different ideas / hypothesis to test. However, once a test begins and data is collected, the presuppositions must be left behind. Presuppositions cannot be used to interpret the data in good science, but rather the scientist must follow where the evidence leads. Many creationists and evolutionists, especially non-scientists, can be found mixing science and isms through presuppositions without being aware of the problems and damage it causes.

In a photography contest, the judge should be unbiased regarding subject matter or person entering. The judging is typically based on quality, composition, artistic effect, and so forth. IF a contest is held and every person that wins or shows has a baby in the image, the judge has probably shown a strong bias towards babies that is unfair to other images that were probably as good or psosibly better than the baby images.

Walter ReMine brought the concept of Discontinuity Systematics into the realm of Baraminology. Discontinuities are described as “large scale morphological gaps and an absence of large-scale phylogeny”. Simply put, this means that there were big differences in appearance and no line of distinct ancestral lines from which it came. This was an important concept since the Theory of Evolution has no place for discontinuities. In fact, quite the opposite is true in that Evolution must look for connecting relationships. This work also brought the phrase ‘successive approximation’ in as studies come closer and closer to the proper boundaries of created kinds.
