What Are the Perspectives in the Creation and Evolution Debate?

The topic of Creationism is not a salvation issue. However, anything, like Evolutionism, that causes doubt or difficulty with understanding or believing Scripture is yet another stumbling block that inhibits a person from becoming a believer or a stronger believer. Evolutionism has spread rapidly in the last several decades. At the same time, Creationism has been slow in responding. Baraminology, the scientific study of created kinds, is one of the responses that is now forming and challenging the Theory of Evolution. The more we study kinds, the more evidence is discovered to show that science supports Creationism.

The competition between creation and evolution does not matter ... what does the evidence support?

The competition between creation and evolution does not matter … what does the evidence support?

Creationism Concepts

Creationism is defined as the belief that the universe and the life within it were created by the Eternal as described in the book of Genesis from the Bible. Young Earth Creationism accepts that this occurred nearly 6000 years ago. It states that the creation was originally made in a good condition and that over time it is deteriorating and getting worse due to the fall of man and the action of sin.

Model of Created Kinds

The Created Kinds Theory states that there is a Creator and that there is a limit to the variation that can occur within a kind of plant or animal. According to the theories of Creationism plants, animals, and man were created fully complex and reproducing after their own kind. This allows for variation within a kind, but no transitional forms between kinds. This is in sharp contrast to the Theory of Evolution which states that very big changes can occur over long periods of time and that all organisms are related.

Basic Evidence for the Model of Creationism

What are the expectations and predictions from the Model of Creationism? The evidence from the physical, earth, and biological sciences do match these expectations.

Basic Evidence for a Worldwide Flood

Within a creationist view, many things can be expected under the conditions of such a flood because floods are known for laying down rocks and fossils. First, the fossils should show catastrophic and rapid formation, there should be clearly defined kinds of plants and animals with no transition forms in between, and both simple and complex organisms should exist from the beginning. Second, larger fossils should become polystrate in position as the flood layers quickly settle into place. Third, there should be human artifacts to be found in the fossil record. Furthermore, there would likely be layering where sea life is buried first. The bodies of animals and humans would be less likely because of rotting and decaying.

Creation Science

According to the theories of Creationism, the process of decay is a constant throughout the known universe. Topics such as heat, magnetism, and the laws of motion demonstrate a young universe in which the formative processes are basically finished. About 4,500 years ago there was a worldwide flood covering the face of the earth for about one year. This caused many of the large scale geological features on the surface of the earth, made dramatic changes to the atmosphere, and set into place the modern hydrologic cycle. This theory would predict the rapid formation and catastrophic deformation of sedimentary layers all over the earth. Plants, animals, and mankind were created fully complex and reproducing after their own kind. This allows for variation within a kind, but no transitional forms between kinds. It also predicts the sudden appearance of many well developed languages throughout the Earth.

Intelligent Design

The Intelligent Design concept is a relatively recent idea in the creation / evolution debate. However, its base goes back to the teleological ‘Arguments from Design’ that were created in the late 1700′s in an effort to prove the existence of the Almighty. Officially, the Intelligent Design movement does not take a stand on creation nor is it concerned with a literal interpretation of the Scriptures. Thus, for example, it could accept the seeding of life on Earth by space aliens as the intelligence behind life. However, the general arguments for design can be useful for showing the concept of the Heavenly Creator. The idea of Intelligent Design has been heavily linked to the theory of irreducible complexity. This theory states that complex systems with inter-related parts or functions could not have arisen piece by piece but must have been made or created as a complete unit.

Evolutionism Concepts

Evolutionism, not to be confused with the Theory of Evolution, is defined as a philosophical, and sometimes spiritual, belief or set of concepts and forces regarding the processes that shape and form life. It is a belief that, over billions of years, all life forms have evolved to their current form (from basic molecules to man) by means of natural processes which cannot be witnessed. It sometimes involves the belief that evolution is heading in a direction of improvement and, therefore, it becomes the goal or highest good and can drive morality and ethics in society. It is commonly associated with (but not necessary for) athiesm, agnosticism, and humanism.

Defining Evolution, the Theory of Evolution, and Evolutionism

Within the Creation and Evolution debate, many discussions turn chaotic because individuals do not understand the differences between the generic use of evolution, the scientific Theory of Evolution, and the philosophical beliefs of Evolutionism.

Comparing Variation within a Kind to Microevolution and Macroevolution

A good example of how scientific models, worldviews, and research all come together is found in the amount of genetic variation that is expected within the Creation and Evolution models. This topic is one that causes many heated debates on discussion forums and is made all the more complex because the general public will sometimes use different or more general definitions of these concepts than do the technical papers of scientists.

The Theory of Evolution

The theory of evolution is a secular science model which suggests that all organisms have descended from a common ancestor. Through the processes of descent with modification and natural selection, the first molecules of life slowly became more complex and eventually brought about the plants and animals, including man, known today. The theory of evolution suggests that the first self-replicating molecules formed about 3.5 billion years ago. Then organisms went through a stage of diversification about 1 billion years ago. Later, man appeared about 1 million years ago.

Fallacies of Evolution in Science

The Theory of Evolution requires certain base assumptions to be true for the theory to continue to work. If these basic assumptions are incorrect, then the entire Theory of Evolution does not work. Following are a few of the main objections that can be made with the Theory of Evolution.

Fallacies of Theistic Evolution

Theistic Evolution is a concept that tries to mix or find compromise between the ideas of a special creation and the concept of evolution. Generally speaking, the various forms of Theistic Evolution allow for a Creator who works through the process of evolution, including competition and natural selection, as a means of making plants, animals, and mankind. However, not only does theistic evolution contain all the problems of the Theory of Evolution, but it is also filled with problems, difficulties, and self-contradictions from a scriptural standpoint.

Naturalism

Naturalism has its base in the Natural Philosophy of the Greek Empire and it focused on the premise of nature existing without a god or, at most, with a distant god that may have started things but now does not interact with nature. It was a materialistic concept where physical matter, without anything spiritual, could produce all that exists. These concepts all but do away with a Creator and the possibility of a relationship with Him.

Eugenics and Neo-Eugenics Movements

The word ‘eugenics’ comes from the Greek language and literally means “good genes”. The formal Eugenics Movement formed around social Darwinism in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. It was based on the concept that some people are more evolved than others and promoted the search for finding the best and most evolved humans.

Intelligent Design Concepts

Intelligent Design is defined as the necessity of an intelligent cause for anything with high levels of complex and specified information. In the scientific arena, it searches for empirical evidence and signs of intelligence through information systems including specified information (ie. patterns) and complex information (ie. unlikely to occur by chance). Research often focuses on the field of biology and the complexity of living organisms.

The Bias of Methodological Naturalism

Methodological Naturalism is the application of philosophical naturalism to the processes of scientific research.

The Bias of Methodological Creationism

Methodological Creationism is the application of the faith-based beliefs of Creationism to the processes of scientific research.

Answering the Great Questions of Life

The Great Questions of Life are defined as questions whose concepts and answers will guide a person’s goals, purpose, and mission in life. The answers to these questions often produce a philosophical base or worldview from which a person interprets the events in life. These questions are often connected with spiritual applications or repercussions concerning the answer’s relationship to eternal life.

Searching for Answers

One of the best ways to encourage life is to boldly confront the issues raised by the great questions of life rather than fearing or shying away from them. If we do not have the answers to these questions, then our lives will generally become reactive to situations and people rather than proactive towards a goal. Reactions to family, friends, work, and society may produce a lifestyle we are comfortable with, but a lifestyle is not life itself. When we know the answers to the questions of life, it will produce a sense of purpose and meaning that can give us goals and projects on which to move forward. It is a means to life abundant and a life with blessing.

Life is Precious

Life was created with a purpose by the Creator. It was no accident. It was not a random chance of chemicals coming together. It was a special act. Knowing this should make a person consider how precious life really is. For man to live life to the fullest, he must understand where he came from, where he really is, where he should be, and where he can be once again.

Who Am I?

“Who am I?” is another one of the great questions of life. In the asking of the question, there is recognition that one person is not just like another. Each person has their own interests, skills, and activities in which to participate. The thoughtful answer to “who am I?” reveals a lot about a person and reveals the goals and work a person might have for their life. But how can this question be best answered?

Where Did I Come From?

Where did I come from? This is, perhaps, the single most important question a person can ask among the great questions of life. It deals with not only with a person’s personal history and ancestry, but also with the origin of man. How a person answers this question will directly impact how all other questions of life are answered. This answer is a basic concept or premise upon which is built all other concepts. Within the world, there are two main answers given to this topic. The first answer is from a secular perspective that yields the view of human evolution. The second answer is from Scripture that describes the creation of mankind by the Creator. The former produces a life without meaning and the latter produces life with great purpose and meaning.

What Do I Want?

“What do I want?” is another one of the great questions of life. Yet many people have not deeply considered what this really means. Instead, answers come from what is popular in their society such as a big house or a sporty car. In regards to life, ‘what do I want’, goes deeper than that … it helps us form our goals and decide how we will spend our time.

What Happens After I Die?

“What happens after I die?” is another one of the great questions of life. This time, examining what happens when that life ends. There are only a few possible answers and those given by Evolution and Creation are almost as far apart as possible.

What is Honor?

To honor something is to lift it up and make it important. Honor must be earned through action and then given by another. Within society, honor can be given for character traits, lifestyles, business success, and victorious warriors. Within the Kingdom of Heaven, honor is given for righteousness.

Journal of a Baraminologist

This journal is a record of my personal experiences, thoughts, and lessons while on the search for created kinds and while exploring our physical world. These experiences are motivated by both the need for field research and my own desire to understand life.
