What Are the Ark Kinds?

The ark kinds are defined as the individual types of created kinds that were saved from the destruction by passage on Noah’s ark. The concept of the ark kinds is based on the biblical account of a worldwide flood as found in the book of Genesis. The ark kinds were composed of the land based and air breathing animals that would perish during a flood. The animals on the ark were representative of their individual kinds and would be the progenitors of new populations on earth after the flood. The ark kinds were taken in pairs and are expected to have a broad genetic diversity which allowed for rapid speciation in the new environments which existed after the flood. In large part, the fossil record is a testament to the flood and a reminder of the varieties of plants and animals that existed before the flood.

Pre-Flood Environment

Many varieties of modern plants and animals are found in large sizes in the fossil record. These likely existed before the flood and show how conditions have changed. Just as Scripture records the lifespan of people dropped dramatically after the flood, similar probably occurred with plants and animals.

Giant Tomato Plant

Dr. Kei Mori, a physicist from Keio University in Japan, worked with a Cherry Tomato plant that started in his basement. He gave light to the plant with a fiber optic cable which filtered out UV light, a process called ‘Himawari Sunlighting’. He also added pressurized CO2 in a gasket around the stem and root system. At some point, this plant was moved to a greenhouse which also simulated these conditions. Within 2 years, the tomato plant had reached 16 feet tall with 800 tomatoes. In 16 years, it was reported at 45 feet tall with 15,000 tomatoes. It was further reported that, under these conditions, the tomatoes would stay green until they were picked.

Hyperbaric Chambers

Hyperbaric chambers are amble to increase the atmospheric pressure inside of the unit and some can also control the amount of certain gases like oxygen. Amazing results have happened using these machines for healing. In fact, some hospitals have started using these machines. Healing occurs much faster under these conditions. The effects of hyperbaric atmospheres on biological organisms is largely unknown. In one experiment, a copperhead snake was placed in a hyperbaric chamber. After two weeks, the venom which is normally a disordered protein became quite ordered (it was not tested for toxicity). These conditions seem to enhance some proteins and reduce others.

Single Leafed Raspberry

A raspberry plant was grown in 100% humidity. It usually has leaves that come in threes, but this had only single leaves.

The horsetail rush typically grows 2-3 feet tall but in the fossil record it can be found taller than telephone poles. Cattails, which stand about 6 feet tall today have fossil equivalents 60 feet tall.

Fossil Moose about 12 feet tall at the shoulders. Six foot long beaver found in Ohio. Huge fossil sharks tooth. There is a 14 foot shell from a turtle. Four foot wide dragonfly wings. Crocodile about 45 feet long. Cockroach about 1 foot long. 20 foot tall camel in Texas. 9 foot donkey.

Ark Kinds

The Ark Kinds are the creatures that were alive and gathered together on board Noah’s ark during the time of the flood. The Ark Kinds primarily refer to the land dwelling animals that required oxygen to breathe. At the time of the flood, the pairs of animals were gathered together to keep the different kinds alive. These pairs were obviously able to mate and reproduce. This breeding ability is sometimes referred to as the ‘Noah Test’ for kinds. If they are able to have offspring, they are of the same kind. Plants are expected to survive by root systems or seeds. The land dwelling animals known today are considered to have descended from the Ark Kinds just as people have descended from Noah and his family.

What Size was Noah’s Ark?

The question is often asked if Noah’s Ark was actually big enough to contain all the animals it needed to carry (as well as food and clean water). The answers have varied as people have suggested different sizes for the ark as well as using different methods of determining how many animals actually needed to be on the ark.

How Many Animals were on Noah’s Ark?

It is often asked if it is possible for Noah to place millions of species on the ark and take care of them for a period of several months. That question is irrelevant because he did not need to do this. Instead of working with species as we know them today, Noah was asked to take Kinds on the ark. Instead of millions of species, he probably had about 700 kinds which would require about 3,000 animals – most of which were small.

Would Dinosaurs Fit on Noah’s Ark?

Some have questioned whether or not the Ark would have been big enough to hold the dinosaurs since some of these creatures weigh many tons. The simplest answer to this situation is to remember that Noah did not necessarily have to carry adult animals on the Ark, but instead could have carried babies or young animals which would be much smaller. Furthermore, it is estimated that only about 50 Kinds of dinosaurs are now known with most of them being small in size.

Has Noah’s Ark been Found?

In recent decades, various sightings of what could be Noah’s Ark have been made in the Ararat Mountain region in modern day Turkey. As of yet, nothing has been truly confirmed, but the descriptions given by witnesses is intriguing.

The Flood within Scripture

The record of Scripture states that the flood of Noah’s time was caused by both rainfall over forty days and forty nights and the opening of the fountains of the deep. During a roughly one year period, the entire world, including the mountains were covered with water and the life that dwelled on land perished. This occurred about 4,500 years ago on the Scriptural calendar.

Fish Survival

It has been suggested that pre-flood seas were about 1/3 to 1/2 the strength of modern salt water oceans (Rodenbeck). Many fish are able to adapt to changes in salinity though only a few do it regularly.

Post-Flood Conditions

Presumably, the world was in much worse shape after the Flood. The environment had changed drastically and probably included new things like rain and snow as well as hot deserts and frozen areas. It probably now included mountains and tropical areas. As the animals emerged from the Ark and began migrating, they would begin adapting to these environments. Such adaptations would be limited to what existed within the gene pool of any given population.

Dispersion After the Flood

According to a scriptural timeline, about 4,300 years have passed since the time of the flood. This probably included an ice age shortly after the period of the flood. During this time, rapid diversification would have occurred within animal kinds as they spread out and moved into new habitats. This diversification is not a sign of evolution in progress, but is instead simply the breeding out of characteristics that already exist within the animals.

Languages After the Tower of Babel

When languages appear in history, they are well developed and complex. Instead of beginning with primitive forms, they start complex and tend to simplify over time. The study of linguistics suggests there are about 100 languages that are the base of all the known languages in the world today. This is slightly more than the 70 languages / nations mentioned in Scripture after the Tower of Babel.

Extinction After the Flood

When extinction occurs due to environmental changes, other species or kinds with traits favorable for that new environment will likely be ready to move in and fill that environment.
