Did an Asteroid Kill European Dinosaurs 66 Million Years Ago?

Science Daily produced this article “Dinosaurs wiped out rapidly in Europe 66 million years ago” on Jan. 13, 2015. This is a slight twist or addition to a familiar evolutionary explanation for the extinction of dinosaurs that adds the death of European dinosaurs to the same time of death as American dinosaurs. The primary theme involves the Chicxulub (pronounced cheek-she-loob) asteroid which struck the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. The resulting catastrophe, much like the concept of a nuclear winter, was supposedly the agent that killed the dinosaurs.

Within the evolutionary geologic column, the K-T boundary represents the transition from the older Cretaceous rock (known in German as Kreide) to the newer Tertiary rock (T). Many dinosaur fossils exist in the former while few are found in the latter. Supposedly, the Chicxulub asteroid hit at about the same time (give or take many thousands of years) as the K-T boundary formed and added a thin dust layer with an unusually high percentage of iridium around the earth. Interestingly, the crater site has since been studied by many means including gravity sensors, magnetic surveys, and even had oil wells drilled … what they find is that there is no such impact crater. It does seem hard to imagine dinosaurs being killed off by this asteroid if it never happened.

It really is quite amazing how often an asteroid impact is used to explain how something has occurred (or to rescue an otherwise unworkable observation) within the evolutionary framework. Asteroid impacts are used as a possible means of making the Earth’s moon, to explain the unexpected magnetism and tilt of the planets in the solar system, and various catastrophic events on earth including the death of the dinosaurs.

How is the iridium, the K-T boundary, and dinosaur death explained within Creationism? Quite simply in fact. The mass dinosaur death is the result of the global flood. The K-T boundary represents the time of the global flood and subsequent disasters which set down layers of sediment and volcanic rock. The iridium deposits show signs of volcanic activity as there is little iridium surrounding the sight of the impact crater and, at the same time, too much spread over the earth to come from such an asteroid. Iridium released through volcanic activity does spread over the earth quite easily.
