Sulfurous Bacteria – the Largest Gap of Non-Evolution Yet

Sulfur Bacteria Fossils

from UCLA Center for the Study of Evolution

Scientists studying sulfurous bacteria specimens collected off the coast of Chile have found they are indistinguishable from preserved specimens found in Australian rocks that are dated 2.3 and 1.8 billion years old. This includes having similar shape and chemistry.

This bacteria joins the ever growing list of ‘living fossils’ – organisms that have not changed over large periods of time. Sometimes they are referred to as ‘Lazarus Taxon’ due to an organisms reappearance similar to ‘coming to life again’. Some species have continuously been known through geologic time but in a state of ‘stasis’ – a period of time with no evolutionary changes. Because of the time frames involved, such species have continued after great changes in the Earth’s climate and major extinction events. Ironically, it was Charles Darwin himself who coined the phrase describing the platypus and other creatures:

“These anomalous forms may almost be called living fossils; they have endured to the present day, from having inhabited a confined area, and from having thus been exposed to less severe competition. from On the Origin of Species.”

The Coelacanth, a fish thought to have gone extinct 65 million years ago but recently found still alive, is perhaps the most famous living fossil. Other animals include the Gracilidris ants, Monoplacophor molluscs, and the Glypheoid lobsters. With plants, Ginkgo is probably one of the best known and others include the Nightcap Oak of Austrailia and the Dawn Redwood of China

Within the Theory of Evoution, attempts have been made to explain these living fossils. It is suggested that species not adapted to a specific habitat (a generalist) would be more likely to survive; however, many of the living fossils are specialized. They also suggest that species may not change because the habitat has not changed, but this does not work compared with many other species both living and exinct.

There are thousands of animals and plants that are alive and unchanged from fossils. In fact, the fossil records typically shows creatures staying the same, not evolving. This is no surprise for the Theory of Created Kinds. Modern living members of a Created Kind should look similar to or be the same as their ancestors. Also, these items were created only thousands of years ago, not millions or billions of years.
