Pterosaur Sightings

Exploring the Possibility of Living Dinosaurs

From the mountains of Mexico to the islands of Papua New Guinea, pterosaur sightings happen around the world. The possibility of living dinosaurs is intriguing. A general overview of areas with common sightings is given.

Pterosaur Taxonomy

Pterosaurs are divided into two main groups for classifcation including the Rhamphorhynchoidea (long-tailed) and the Pterodactyloidea (short-tailed).

Pterosaur Fossils

Fossil Pterosaurs are found in North & South America, China, Africa, and Austrailia.

General Appearance of Pterosaurs

Pterosaurs come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Some were as small as birds while others were the size of small airplanes (with a wingspan of about 33 feet). Most have long narrow beaks and probably sharp teeth. Most are believed of being able to do powered flight rather than just gliding. It is possible that a few had hair or fur. It is generally regarded that pterosaurs laid eggs.

The Ropen of Papua New Guinea

The Ropen is is a nocturnal creature found on Umboi Island in Papua New Guinea. It is described as a long-tailed pterosaur and is therefore classified as a Rhamphorhynchoid. It is said to be active at night and is primarily seen flying from the mountains down to the shoreline or reef where it is presumed to feed. It has a glow that comes from the belly which lasts a few seconds, much like a firefly.

Sierra Madre Mountains of Mexico

The Huichol Indians live deep inside the Sierra Madre Mountains on the western side of Mexico. They recognize drawings of pterodactyls and claim these animals are a nuisance because they would sometimes eat their animals or even children. Therefore, they would smoke them out of the cave and club these animals to death.
